Urban District Ink Blended Hexagons Card for WWYS #118

Hello and welcome to this week’s WWYS Challenge. I have to confess, this stamp set from the Occasions Catalogue has been sitting on my shelves unused until now. I wish I’d pulled it out sooner though because it’s a great set for Father’s Day, but for other occasions too. You can use it for masculine or feminine cards, to say “You’re the Best” or, as I’ve done here, to let someone know they’re “No. 1” in your books. By adding “friend” to this card you could give it to your bestie too. This set will be retiring on 31 May, so don’t hang around if you want it.

I chose Bermuda Bay, Marina Mist and Island Indigo to ink blend some hexagons (using a framelit from the coordinating dies in the suite). I used the bolt heads image and silver embossed over these and created a distressed look with water. This panel was offset mounted on a layer of Bermuda Bay which was “bolted” to a silver foil panel embossed using the Hexagons Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing Folder (say that six times fast!). I love the effect you get with this folder – it’s really tactile.

TIP: A simple way to add interest to images or a background is to drip or splatter water over the design then dab off with a paper towel. It’s a great technique to use on masculine cards where you don’t want to add bling.

The sentiment was simply stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black ink and die cut using the same die used to do the ink blending.

I continued the theme through to the inside and on the envelope to finish off.

Thanks for visiting my blog. If you’ve left me a comment, thank you! You’ve made my day. Be sure to hop on over to the WWYS blog to see what everyone else has made and enter your own project. You could be our next guest designer!

It’s time to say goodbye to products from the Occasions and Annual Catalogues to make way for all the exciting new products which will be coming in June. Some old favourites and some recent ones, and a load of paper, cardstock and also the 2014-2016 In Colours will all be gone by May 31 and are available only while stocks last! The retiring inks, re-inkers and cardstocks always sell out very quickly, so don’t delay in placing your order. You can see the entire catalogue of retiring items here, and don’t forget to copy and paste the Host Code for May – 74D3KFWZ – when you place an online order to receive a thank you gift from me. Quick & Easy Birthday Card

Hello and welcome. I just wanted to pop in quickly and share a quick and easy birthday card using the Birthday Blast Bundle from the Occasions Catalogue.

I made this 60th card for a male friend recently, and it took me all of 10 minutes to make. It would probably have taken 5 but for the heat embossing! This bundle is a must have if you like quick and easy. And this bundle really packs a punch too – it’s so easy to make a card that has a big impact. And I love that it’s suitable for a male or female – just change the colours. Kids would love it too.

And here’s the inside:

I love this font, don’t you? And it looks stunning heat embossed.

I’ve added this card to the Crazy Crafters’ Team Project Highlights, hosted by Kylie Bertucci. Each week we get the opportunity to be highlighted on Kylie’s blog and visitors are able to vote for their top three picks. If you’d like to vote for my card and see what the other talented Crazies have been making, you can do that here.

Thanks for visiting my blog. If you’ve left me a comment, thank you! You’ve made my day.

Masculine Valentine Card for GDP022

Sketch Challenge

With tomorrow being Valentine’s Day and a sketch challenge on over at Global Design Project this week, I thought I’d put together a Valentine’s card, but one that could be given to a guy – no flowers, no “feminine” colours, but still expressing love.  I think it’s still sweet and lovely (but don’t tell him that … shhhh).

Here’s this week’s sketch. Click on the image to head over and see all the fabulous inspiration from the design team and entrants, or to submit an entry of your own.

GDP022

And here’s my interpretation:

Masculine Valentine Card

Something Old, Something New

I set out to create a card with a bold design and when I was looking through my stamp sets the wavy line and dotted line images from the Sunburst Sayings set made me think of Australian Aboriginal art.  So I began with the band across the top layer.  I wanted a bold sentiment for the front as well and after searching through my collection decided on the “you & me” image from the Perfect Pennants set.  Embossed in clear over Early Espresso it is strong and bold – just perfect!

Non-traditional Valentine Colours

Usually the first colours that spring to mind when you think of Valentine’s cards are red and pink.  Well I made a conscious decision to not include red or pink on this card (or flowers either!).  I love the pairing of Mint Macaron and Early Espresso and teamed with Sahara Sand I think they work very well.

Masculine Valentine Card

Theme

The wavy lines and dots were carried through in the use of the dotted DSP (from the Neutrals DSP Stack) which I trimmed with the wavy blade on my Stampin’ Trimmer and the dots around the sentiment.  These were pierced using the Updated Essentials Paper-Piercing Pack and then accented with a Stampin’ Chalk marker.  A few hearts from the Itty Bitty Accents Epoxy Stickers pack, backed with Mint Macaron cardstock provided the finishing touch.

Using Layers as a Design Element

Adding layers with differently sized borders can be utilised to add interest without “cluttering” a card with embellishments.  Used deliberately here, I wanted to highlight the colours on this card without overwhelming the other elements.  I think I succeeded.  What do you think?

XOXO Gail
