“Bubblegum Grunge” Card using Delicate Details for WWYS #106

Hello and welcome to this week’s WWYS Challenge. I’m excited to share today’s card with you. It’s one of those rare occasions where the seed of an idea results in a card that is even better than you imagined it. I’m dubbing the technique “Bubblegum Grunge” as it has an element of grunge to it in the background. Grunge is defined as untidy, nonconformist, lazy, dirty, grimy. Leave off the dirty and grimy, and that’s where I came up with the “bubblegum” bit – less hardcore than true grunge.

The card base is A6 size (A4 cut in half on the short side and folded in half) and cut from thick Whisper White cardstock. For the front panel I’ve used a piece of watercolour paper cut to a standard A6 size (10.5 x 14.9cm). I used two of the images from the Delicate Details Stamp Set and clear heat embossed in a few places, and then did a graduated watercolour wash with Blushing Bride, Rose Red and Real Red inks over the top.

TIP: Tape your paper down to a board using low-tack tape like painter’s tape or even washi to prevent  warping when you do a watercolour wash.

I then simply inked up the same images in the three pink/red shades as well as Crumb Cake, sometimes dabbing off some of the ink before stamping randomly, sometimes intentionally crooked, to get the grungy look I was after. The doily also got a bit of the watercolour treatment. I trimmed the piece until I was happy with it (it ended up at 9.7 x 14cm) and adhered it to the card base.

The sentiment on the front and inside are matching and come from the Suite Sentiments Stamp Set. This is one of my SO favourite sets – I really hope it’s in the next Annual Catalogue! I’ve white heat embossed it onto Blushing Bride cardstock and die cut it with the 2nd smallest  circle from the Stitched Shapes Framelits, and then sponged a bit of Blushing Bride ink to make the white stand out more. I did the same on the inside:

I finished my card off with some copper Metallic Thread, Blushing Bride 1cm Stitched Satin Ribbon, Blushing Bride Solid Baker’s Twine, and a scattering of Enamel Shapes in each of three colours.

Crazy Patchwork Card

Hello and welcome to my blog and today’s project. Have you ever had crafting ideas percolating around in your head for ages, and then one day the planets align – the perfect opportunity to use that idea presents itself and you instantly know that that idea is exactly what you had envisioned for your current project? It happens to me a lot! And today’s project springs from an idea I had when I first played with the lace image from the Grateful Bunch Stamp Set. That was way back in February last year when I made this embellished notebook! The idea was to make a card that looked exactly like a paper version of a popular quilting technique called “crazy patchwork”. In crazy patchwork, literally anything goes and it’s usually a mix of patterns, stitches, appliquéd flowers, beads, buttons – anything! Here’s an example:

So … a friend recently asked me to make a card for a work colleague who was leaving. I like to personalise cards to the recipient, so I asked my friend what this lady was like. She said “Well, she’s Scottish … oh, and she’s into quilting.” As soon as the words left her mouth, the idea that had been in the back of my mind for all those months literally hit me like a bolt of lightning. I couldn’t believe my luck and I was so excited. To be honest, this card was a real labour of love; it took me hours to create but I just adore it! And it was so satisfying to get that design out of my head and into my hands. 🙂

Well, after that exhaustive introduction, here’s my card:

Although the Warmth and Cheer paper I used is now retired it was perfect for a Scottish lady! And besides all the heat embossing, the paper piecing was what took the longest. Accuracy is key here! I started in one corner and worked across, adding pieces to a backing piece of photocopy paper until I was happy with the look. I then trimmed it down to suit my 6″ x 6″ card size. I used images from the Lovely Stitching Stamp Set and the Sale-a-Bration stamp set Delicate Details, which you can earn for free with a $90 purchase. Here’s a close-up of the embossing detail:

For the sentiment I used a circle cut with the Stitched Shapes Framelits Dies. The “Best Wishes” comes from the Blooms & Wishes Stamp Set, and the “from all of us” comes from the Crazy About You Stamp Set.

Finally, I added the “You’ll be missed” sentiment on an extra piece of photocopy paper which acted as additional “pages” since there would be many people writing in the card. This sentiment is from the Wild About Flowers Stamp Set.

I also added some tartan paper to the envelope flap to finish off the project (see main image). Although this card took a relatively long time to make, I was so happy with the finished result. What do you think? Was it worth it?

Update 17 Feb 2017: I have added this card to this week’s Crazy Crafters Highlights. If you’d like to vote for my card, voting begins at 6:00pm AEST (7:00pm Daylight Saving Time).

Thanks for stopping by my blog. If you’ve left me a comment, thank you! You’ve made my day.
