Art Deco Inspired Card and Crazy Crafters Blog Hop with Brian King!

CCBH w Brian KingWelcome to the Crazy Crafters Blog Hop with our Special Guest stamper Brian King! This month we are excited to CASE (Copy And Selectively Edit) any project that has been created by Brian.  We hope you find great inspiration from the projects.  You may just be starting the blog hop here at my blog – Gail Davidson, or may have come from the person previous to me.  Be sure to click on the person listed under me further down the page to continue your journey on this blog hop.  We are thrilled that Brian said yes to playing along with the Crazy Crafters this month.  Thank you Brian!  I have created an Art Deco inspired thank you card for the hop today.  I hope you like it. 🙂

I chose to CASE this card of Brian’s:

Brian's_Inspiration_Card

I love Brian’s use of circles and layers.  When I first saw this card it reminded me of the grand and bold geometric shapes of the ostentatious and elegant art deco style which I adore!  So I took that idea to Google and decided on the iconic art deco shape which forms the focal point of my card.  I also googled colours of the period and decided on the classic art deco colours of black and yellow/mustard, which when translated into Stampin’ Up! colours become Basic Black and Delightful Dijon.  I love the way Stampin’ Up!’s colour collections cater for all situations!  So here’s the card I came up with:

Art_Deco_Inspired_Card-1

I kept the layered circles for the sentiment as they suited the style of card perfectly.  I used the third smallest die from the Circles Collection Framelits, the 1 3/4″ circle punch for the black layer, and the 2″ circle punch for the largest layer.  The thank you sentiment from the Happy Happenings stamp set is one of my favourite go to images for thank you cards.  There are also 13 other images in this set for all sorts of occasions in gorgeous fonts.  It’s a great set to have in your stash.  I adore it.

The geometric background layers were constructed as a panel which sits behind the sentiment and showcases it.  For the bottom black layer I used the Curvy Corner Trio punch (one of the Weekly Deals specials!) to add the decorative edges which I thought also fitted the art deco theme beautifully.

Art_Deco_Inspired_Card-2

There’s a lot of dimension going on with this card.  The base layer, the geometric panel, and each of the sentiment layers are adhered using dimensionals, as I wanted this card to be bold and extravagant to reflect the art deco style.

Once I had adhered all the layers, I felt like it needed something more – there was too much blank black space.  I considered using Crushed Curry candy dots but they detracted rather than added to the sense of opulence I was going for because they were too bright.  So I took some White Perfect Accents (also one of the Weekly Deals specials!) and coloured them with a gold metallic Sharpie, and then adhered them so they draw the eye from the bottom of the card up to the sentiment.

I think these colours epitomise the classic elegance of the art deco style.  What do you think?  If you like them too, feel free to save this image and share it on Pinterest.  You’ll also find lots more colour inspiration on my Colour Snapshot Pinterest Board.

Crazy Crafters Blog Hop with Dawn Griffith

CCBH w Dawn Griffith

Welcome to the Crazy Crafters Blog Hop with our Special Guest stamper Dawn Griffith! This month we are excited to CASE (Copy And Selectively Edit) any project that has been created by Dawn.  We hope you find great inspiration from the projects.  You may just be starting the blog hop here at my blog – Gail Davidson, or may have come from the person previous to me.  Be sure to click on the person listed under me further down the page to continue your journey on this blog hop.  We are thrilled that Dawn said yes to playing along with the Crazy Crafters this month.

I have followed Dawn’s blog for a long time.  She joined Stampin’ Up! on 7 October 2003 and started her blog in 2006.  Her team is called the Glitter Queens.  For those of you who know of her, you’ll know how upbeat she is and how her enthusiasm shines through in every blog post and every video.  You would probably also know too, that Dawn loves unusual cards, the colour purple (her fave is Wisteria Wonder) and ….. GLITTER!  Lots.and.lots.of.glitter.

With that being said I chose to CASE this card from Dawn (from her blog post on 18 May 2012) – the Double Peek-a-Boo card.  When the card is closed there are two images in circles on the front, but when you open it, the magic happens!  A slider panel inside the card moves across to reveal two more hidden images.  Here’s the link to Dawn’s blog post which also contains a video.  It’s one that I’ve made before, but I’m “Doin’ it like Dawn” today!  Dawn, I hope you like it!

And here’s my card:

Double_Peek-a-Boo_Card-1

I’ve kept Dawn’s basic design but added a couple of tweaks – and LOTS of bling and glitter!  To stop the narrow internal slider panel from catching on the images that show through on the front of the card, I added two panels of Window Sheet to the two back panels (so that the slider panel is sandwiched between them).  I also added a 1″ strip of Dazzling Diamonds Glimmer Paper to the back of the slider panel to give added detail and finishing to the card’s appearance from the back.

For the card front I stamped the gorgeous flourish image from the First Sight Stamp Set in Versamark, sprinkled with Heat & Stick, heat set, sprinkled with Dazzling Diamonds Glitter and heat set again.  I think I got more glitter on myself, my work surface and just about everywhere else than I did on the card, but the results are stunning!  Believe me, photographs do not do it justice!

The inside was stamped with the same image just using Versamark ink to give a tone-on-tone look, and then given the glitter treatment with Clear Wink of Stella here and there.

The small floral image is from the Bloomin’ Love Stamp Set and coloured with markers in Wisteria Wonder, Perfect Plum, Elegant Eggplant and Pear Pizzazz.  It so adorable!  The sentiments, stamped in Perfect Plum, come from the Petite Pairs Stamp Set (yes, it’s been around since 2012 cos it’s an awesome set!).

The white circles around the images were punched using the 1 3/8″ and 2″ Circle punches, and I used the Updated Essentials Paper-Piercing Pack to pierce the decorative holes.  These were then smothered in Clear Wink of Stella and adhered over the front and inside images.

The final adornment was a double serving of 1/2″ Seam Binding Ribbon in Wisteria Wonder and Whisper White, and, I couldn’t resist – a large Iced Rhinestone!

As I held the finished card in my hand, I smiled to myself as I heard Dawn say “Oh, my gosh!  It’s so cuuuuuute!!!”  Thanks Dawn for entertaining and inspiring so many of us over the years!

If you love these colours as much as Dawn, please feel free to save this colour snapshot.
